Understandably, people do not know what to expect when it comes to a BJJ class, so this page is you guide you through your first session of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
For your first session it is probably best to turn up in a T-shirt and shorts, make sure they are comfortable. For your first few sessions we will normally lend you a Gi suit. After that, if you decide you want to take up jiu-jitsu then you will probably want to buy your own. We are able to supply these at a reasonable cost. Normally people wear a thin T-shirt and either shorts, cycle shorts or sports pants underneath the suit.
We advise you to wash your suit on 30degrees after each session. Any blood stains are best removed with a stain remover like Vanish prior to washing.
If it is your first session you should have already spoken to us so we will be expecting you, introduce yourself to the instructor and he will show you where to go for what.
The session usually consists of a warm-up, then a teaching session where we will take you through several techniques and then some sparring at the end.
Do not worry if it all feels like there is a lot to learn. There is a lot to learn, but with time you learn it.
There are two styles: Gi and Non-Gi. Gi style involves wearing a Gi suit and Non-Gi means wearing shorts and T-shirt. Arguably in terms of self-defence non-Gi is more realistic, but most people do a bit of both.
Make sure you bring a bottle of water, BJJ can get sweaty.
